Fire on the Mountain! - the annual celebration of an ongoing effort to conserve areas of rare montane longleaf pine habitat through the use of prescribed fire at Sprewell Bluff Outdoor Recreation Area near Thomaston-was rained out on March 13 and has been cancelled for the year due to inclement weather. State income tax checkoff contributions to the Georgia Wildlife Conservation Fund have declined in recent years. While not an all-time low, contributions for the most recent fiscal year fell another 20 percent, or nearly $60,000 from the previous year.

A proposed change in the conservation status of loggerhead sea turtles would mean more protection for the most frequently encountered sea turtle on Georgia's coast.
NOAA's Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on March 10 that changes were warranted following a recent global assessment of loggerheads.
